Tillandsia 'Little Shaver' is a hybrid from Tillandsia paleacea and Tillandsia macbrideana. Plants have a beautiful silver sheen on light green, recurving leaves. Presl in an 1827 published copy of Reliquiae Haenkeanae, Tillandsia paleacea is a species native from Colombia to North Chile. It is a perennial epiphyte that grows primarily in the desert or dry shrubland biome at 2950 to 4900 feet above sea level. This beautiful, soft plant can be found growing on rocks, desert sands, or on trees in dry areas. Multi-branched stems can grow to 14" long and will form dense mats if allowed. This plant makes for an exception indoor piece if allowed to grow in bright light and thrive in costal areas with little care. Tillandsia macbrideana is a saxicolous plant found on cliffs in northern Peru at 6880 to 9000 feet above sea level. First published in 1930, macbrideana are a multi-branched plant that sends out slender stolons with polystichous, densely imbricate, triangular, recurved leaves leaves 1-1.5" long. 5-10 rose-colored flowers broom from floral bracts that may be 3-4x as long as the internodes. The abundance of trichomes creates a sheen. Blooms: Blue-violet, candlestick-shaped, emerging from center, flowers that have erect petals. Fruit: Yes - capsule Zoned: 9-11 Environment: Low to mid humidity. It will usually tolerate indoor levels without difficulty. Grows best in 60-90 degrees F and will tolerate as low as 40 degrees for a very short period of time. Needs good air circulation. Light: Bright indirect to semi-direct light. Try to avoid North-facing windows due to lack of sufficient lighting. In lower areas of light, the plant with wither and die. If growing outdoors, it requires part sun. Water: It is recommended to thoroughly mist every 5-10 days or soak twice monthly for up to 5 minutes at a time. Decrease watering if the humidity levels are higher. Gently shake the plant to dislodge water then place upside-down on absorbent material until the leaves are thoroughly dry. If growing outdoors, this plant may require more water depending on the sun intensity. Soggy leaves or overly damp crown/base may encourage leaf drop and disease. Decrease water in winter. Fertilizer: If you choose to fertilize, use a balanced fertilizer ever 1-2 weeks during the growing months. It is advisable to use a epiphyte fertilizer mix or a general-purpose fertilizer diluted to 1/4 of the directions. Notes : This plant is not considered toxic, but should not be consumed.
